Government support for energy efficiency has been scaled back in recent months plus the end of the Green Deal last year. This year we have seen a reduced feed-in-tariffs for solar panels, but there is still help available if you know where to look.

Solar power to surge:

A quarter of all UK homes will have solar panels in the next few years according to research carried out for the major energy companies. Currently only 6.7% of homes in the UK are fitted with solar panels, however almost 20% of homeowners are planning to install them in the near future the report suggested.

The majority of UK homes are not powered by solar energy for a variety of reasons. Some people simply haven’t thought about it (20%) while others are planning to move home in the near future. It seems the largest deterrent for homeowners is the initial cost of solar panels, with 32% citing this as the main reason for not making the energy switch.

Northern Ireland have the most homes being powered by solar panels, in contrast to Wales which has the lowest at 3%.

The results from this study emphasises solar energy’s rise in popularity in recent years thanks to factors such as energy efficiency, financial benefits and environmental concerns.

With the cost of energy increasing all the time households would do well to investigate the benefits solar panels offer. Many commercial enterprises could qualify for free installation making the savings significant and immediate.

Tighten those belts by becoming more energy efficient

Following the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement earlier this week, every financial forecast suggests that most household’s disposable income are set to fall over the coming years. One of the largest expenditures in any household is the cost of energy.

If you have an inefficient heating system (central heating boiler, electric heaters, night storeage heaters etc) or you haven’t got the correct insulation for your walls and roof, then you are spending more money than you need to.

The grants and incentives that are available are under the umbrella of the Government’s ECO (Energy Company Obligation) scheme, and reductions to the funding for this are expected in 2017.

1) Boiler grants will be available until the Energy Company Obligation closes its doors, which will be on the 31 March 2017.

2) The scheme only applies to non condensing gas boilers, or condensing boilers under 86% efficient. Applications for LPG and oil boiler grants are now being considered.

3) The free boiler scheme is proving very popular. From initial contact to the day of installation the whole process could take up to 3 months, this is dependent on the company carrying out the boiler grant installation.

4) Only homeowners and private tenants can apply. Tenants renting privately will need to get permission from their landlord first.

5) Approximately 2.5 million households could potentially benefit from a boiler grant. Your household could be one of them.

6) Energy providers risk massive fines if they don’t meet carbon emissions targets set by the Government.
