Government grants for loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, gas central heating, solar water heating.

Due to overwhelming response, there is currently a 'call back' delay of up to 3 weeks in some areas. If you have not heard from a surveyor after this period, please click this message.

ACT NOW! Please be aware that this period of the year, Spring and Summer, are traditionally 'quiet' for those companies providing loft and cavity wall insulation and so now is the best time to make your enquiry - it should be dealt with relatively quickly. Leaving it until the Autumn or Winter, when surveyors and installers alike are getting busy, could mean you missing out on the savings to be made during the colder months.

Pre Budget Report, 09 Dec 09: "From April 2010, people with a home wind turbine or solar panels who plug their excess power into the national grid will receive on average £900 a year," Mr Darling said. "I intend to make this tax free."

Solar Water Heating.

How does it work?

Solar water heating panels work by utilising the 'greenhouse effect' - directing light onto either a flat panel or tubes residing in a vacuum. A vacuum is an excellent insulator as you'll recognise from use of vacuum flasks. This helps to keep heat loss to a minimum. What counts is the amount of light falling onto them, rather than ambient temperature. In fact, solar panels have been successfully used in the Antarctic for some time now. Care must of course be taken to ensure they are not shaded and work best when facing south, though any roof facing within 90°s of south will be suitable.

The UK receives plenty of light throughout the year, enough that a panel area of 1m² is generally sufficient to provide hot water for each adult in the property. The minimum panel area would normally be in the region of 2.5m².

One of the most common configurations is to have 2 coils in the hot water tank, one for the solar heating, one for a conventional back up such as gas or electricity. This is both more convenient and efficient.

Over the course of a year, the panels should provide some 60% of the property's water heating needs, Summer naturally being the most effective with close to all needs being met, though even during the Winter, around 20% of water heating needs should be met, chiefly by raising significantly, the temperature of the water before it is necessary to heat it further by conventional gas or electric methods.

Solar Panels On roofWhat will it cost?

If you structure your payments efficiently, then it may cost you very little, or nothing. Please read on.

A typical domestic system would produce 15,000 kWh of heat per year and cost around £3,000 to £5,000.

If you pay for your installation by re-mortgaging by a typical £5,000 extra, this might add say £250 a year to your mortgage repayments, with interest rates at 5%. If your average annual energy bill is £1,000, 25% of it, or £250, is generally being used on water heating. In this example then, the system is actually paying for itself straight away. As energy prices rise, as they typically do, your expenditure should start dropping after the first year.

Remember too that the solar savings are tax free, so every pound you save on heating is typically worth around £1.30 of your taxable income.

A good quaility system should last 30+ years and should give you 8 months of free hot water per year, depending on the amount of hot water being used. It will also save on the amount of carbon you put into the atmosphere and in addition, add to the resale value of your home. You and the planet stand to gain from your investment.

Grant savings.

With a maximum of £400 or 30% of the relevant eligible cost, whichever is the lowest.

Please note:

There is currently a £2,500 grant cap per household for micro-generation, solar heating and other technologies. You may apply for grant towards more than one technology, subject to the maximum overall of £2,500,

What do I need?

In addition, before receiving a grant you are required to:

a) insulate the whole of the loft of the property to meet current building regulations e.g. 270mm of mineral wool loft insulation or suitable alternative;
b) install cavity wall insulation (if you have cavity walls);
c) fit low energy light bulbs in all appropriate light fittings;
d) install controls for your heating system to include a room thermostat and a programmer or timer.
