There is unprecedented demand for insulation across the industry at present, due to the recently announced offer of free insulation for the over 70's.

Many of the country's installers are struggling to keep up with demand in 2008. Although booking a survey will be relatively immediate, the installation may take somewhat longer to arrange and the longer it is left, the lower the likelihood of being insulated ready for winter 2008/2009.

Grants, of around 45-55% rising to 75%, are available - whatever your income - for loft or cavity wall insulation and of 100% if you satisfy the eligibility criteria.

Before you enquire, you might like to check if your property is suitable for cavity wall insulation.

In the case of brick constructed houses if the bricks are all laid “side-on” and the walls are about 300mm (12in) thick, they probably have cavities.

If they have a regular pattern of “side on and end on” brickwork they are usually 225mm (9in) - or the brick length - thick and more likely to be solid walls:
