ACT NOW! Please be aware that this period of the year, Spring and Summer, are traditionally 'quiet' for those companies providing loft and cavity wall insulation and so now is the best time to make your enquiry - it should be dealt with relatively quickly. Leaving it until the Autumn or Winter, when surveyors and installers alike are getting busy, could mean you missing out on the savings to be made during the colder months.

Pre Budget Report, 09 Dec 09: "From April 2010, people with a home wind turbine or solar panels who plug their excess power into the national grid will receive on average £900 a year," Mr Darling said. "I intend to make this tax free."

Bio Mass Stoves .

How does it work?

Bio mass can be considered to be a relatively green option, especially in comparison with coal, oil or gas heating and where power stations are powered by fossil fuels.

As the plants that are used to form bio mass take out as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as they release during burning, bio mass is carbon neutral. Each unit of mass burnt is - hopefully - replaced by new plants to counter the carbon being released.

Fossil fuels release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere from oils, coals etc that have lain dormant for millions of years and they do so far faster than it took to form.

What will it cost?

For a domestic system for a typical detached house with annual heating requirements of 25,000kWh. The cost to install will be around £2,400 and £2,600.

b) install cavity wall insulation (if you have cavity walls);
c) fit low energy light bulbs in all appropriate light fittings;
d) install controls for your heating system to include a room thermostat and a programmer or timer.
